I cannot express how awful I feel when I see tese families going out to India's new flashy malls, their own spoilt brat kids in tow, with the "child helpers" trailing at a respectful distance. Typically, the child helpers are purchased from their parents living in villages for a lump sum - say Rs 5000/- for 6 months - and made to live on the floor in their flats. The helpers get food and clothing but- no company, no education and always know that they are there to work - from sunup to late at night. Often they are barely older than the kids they 'care for'. It's a highy sensitive topic. And the worst of it is, it's not a subject easily discussed with the chatterati "but we're helping them rather have seeing them begging on the streets" attitude. Sickening. I’m Indian, with Indian middle + upper middle class friends who use child labour in their flats. I don't have any money....it just seems like more people would care about the millions of kids who are slaves. While I hear about reparations to descendants of slaves from 200 years ago, my mind wonders about the people who are slaves right now. Slavery is alive and well, and it's almost all women and children. Yet people here go on and watch their superbowls and spend money on SUV's and outrageous gas prices like there's nothing really bad going on anywhere. Sometimes I can't sleep thinking about what is happening to someone right this minute, right this very minute, a child is being raped, beaten, worked to death, held against their will; all the while probably wondering why why why, is this all there is, is this life? won't anyone help me, doesn't anyone care. it astounds me daily. I say child slavery and prostitution are just another notch on the same slippery slope and the same line of culture that allows poverty at all and prostitution at all- I say first protect women from prostitution by ACTIVELY DISALLOWING POVERTY- this will cease the amount of women willing to perform such acts out of desperation to survive, and reduce the amount of families who DUE TO PERSONAL, POLITICAL, AND NATIONAL GREED- MUST SELL THEIR CHILDREN! People are so hypocritical, living in a capitalist state that rapes and pillages countries world-wide and where those top world powers act as a dictator and effective slave-master to the other nations in the world- and where in each country individuals strive for wealth and luxury AT THE COST of the labour and poverty of the poor and less well paid both in their own country and world-wide.
